1 Corinthians 13: 1 & 13

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

My favourite idol – Aaron Kwok (4C Hui Yuen Sum)

I have a high opinion of my favourite idol, Aaron Kwok. He is a pop singer, at the same time, also a dancer and a movie star.

Aaron is famous because of his talent and excellent dancing. He is also known as ‘King of Dancing”. In recent years, he has won 2 awards of best artist. This shows that he is talented at acting and this is one of the reasons why I have admired him for so long.

To me, Aaron is so handsome. He has a straight nose and tanned skin and he is so muscular. His sunny looks make me like him so much.

Another reason why I admire him is that he is kind-hearted. He always shows up in charity shows and donates money to help sick children.

I think a superstar should be talented and also help others out of the goodness of their heart. Aaron has both of these. Therefore, he deserves my admiration.

My favourite idol – Joey Yung (4C Mak Wun Sha)

My favourite idol is Joey Yung. She is a pop singer in Hong Kong.

Joey is an optimistic girl. She always smiles and thinks in positively. She is brave too. When she faces problems, especially negative reports about her, she won’t cry or becomes troubled. She will try her best to solve the problems. She is also so helpful and kind-hearted. She always helps others.

I like Joey because of her wonderful voice. Her songs always impress me. I think she is the queen of pop music in Hong Kong. She is hard-working too. She makes a lot of efforts to sing good songs for her fans and this makes her a good example for young people. She is always nice to her fans and we can always see her cute smiles, so I’m impressed by her very much.

Smoking takes away your life! Say “No!” to smoking! (7A Lin Sai-keung)

Just a decade ago, the problem of smoking was extremely serious in Hong Kong. There were many people smoking on the street, at home or wherever possible. Now, we are so glad to see that the number of smokers in Hong Kong is decreasing; but we are sad to find that the average age of smokers is getting younger. So what happened to our Hong Kong youngsters?

Before looking at the harmful effects and terrible consequences of smoking, we should first find out why teenagers are smoking at a young age.

To begin with, teenagers may think that smoking makes them look cool. This means teenagers underestimate the negative effects brought by smoking. Instead, they think smoking makes the boys more handsome and the girls more attractive. With a cigarette in their hands, they think they can attract more friends.

Second, teenagers mistakenly think that smoking helps them become mature. Teenagers are in a stage of change; sometimes they try to imitate adults and hope that they can become mature. Smoking is traditionally regarded as an adult behaviour. Thus, when teenagers smoke, they think they are more mature. But, we are sorry to say that this is totally wrong and they are harming themselves.

For most teenagers in Hong Kong, they have to go to school 5 days a week. After more than ten years, some of them may start to feel that going to school is boring and they want something else to do. They may become very vulnerable at this moment and if they have friends who are smokers they are very likely to become smokers too. After all, peer pressure is something difficult to cope with even to the tough kids. So, under the persuasion of their friends, teenagers start smoking regardless of their own health and young age. However, they do not know they are leading themselves to death.

There could be thousands of reasons to explain why teenagers smoke, but in fact, why shouldn’t teenagers, to be more accurate people in general, smoke?

First of all, smoking ruins our health and may even cause death. According to numerous researches carried out in different countries by various scientists, smoking can cause hundred kinds of diseases. Cigarettes contain toxic chemicals such as tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide. These chemicals increase your heart rate and blood pressure and cause fatal diseases such as lung cancer.

Moreover, smoking darkens people’s complexion easily. As aforementioned, cigarettes contain different types of toxic chemicals. Not only are these chemicals detrimental to human body, but they also worsen people’s complexion. When people start smoking, their teeth and fingernails become yellow very soon. In fact, people can tell you are a smoker if you have smoked for an extended period of time.

Last but not least, smoking affects other people. When people smoke, the surrounding air is polluted. It is true that everyone has the right to smoke, but on the contrary, everyone has the right to enjoy fresh air too. In fact, smokers are not popular among non-smokers. In order not to affect others, people should quit smoking and make the environment clean.

It is stupid to smoke. Smoking is harmful to your health and social relationship. Be a healthy and smart teen! Say “No!” to smoking!

“Technology is a hindrance, not a help, to students because they are wasting too much time on MSN, computer games and other new technology. (5E Cindy)

I firmly agree with the above statement. Nowadays, technology becomes more and more popular and it is not difficult to see that there are numerous technological products in our daily life! Although the uses of technology have improved our lives and we can communicate with the others by using, for instance, MSN. Nevertheless, there are many disadvantages occurred when we abuse the use of technology! I will examine each of them in detail.

First of all, our health will be harmed when we spend too much time on the use of computer and television. It is to everybody’s knowledge that there is radiation released from them. In turn, we will suffer from shortsightness and other vision illnesses easily. According to a suvery conducted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, there are more than thirty six per cent of primary students in Hong Kong suffering from shortsightness. Comparing with other countries, Hong Kong is the a city having the problem to the most serious extent, in the world!

Second, students waste too much time on computer games and other electric game products like NDS and PSP. They cannot pay attention to their studies. Iin accordance with one interview which is underwent in June, more than eight per cent of Hong Kong students own electric game products and each of them has three on average. It is very common that students spend their past-time on computer games! If the students waste too much time and energy on playing computer games, how can they pay attention to the lessons in school energetically? How can they rivet on their studies without taking notice of those games? It is not hard to understand that students will be addicted on those computer games and ignore their studies!

Third, there are many violent and pornographic information on the internet. Although we can search for different types of information, there are still some unavoidable adverse effects. Inevitably, students will be affected inappropriately in terms of psychological development.

Last but not least, I think technology is a hindrance to students because most of them do not really know how to use technology in a proper way! In view of this, I think it is much necessary for students to restrain themselves when they are using the technology. Besides, they should schedule the times spent on the technology products.

A story in a restaurant (5D Huga Chan)

WOW! I had a perfect worktime in “Chinese food”!

At first, I felt bored during worktime. Cause I was just repeating the same work everyday, for example: serving the food to customers, counting the money, washing the dishes. If I had enough money to buy new books, I would not work in here definitely.

One day evening, my last three days at this restaurant, an old lady and two kids entered.

“May I have your order?” I said slowly and smilingly.

She counted her coins carefully, “A bowl of fishball noodles,”

“It will take a few mintes for cooking.”

“And may I have empty two bowls?” She asked hopefully.

“Sure!”

After the bowl of noodle was served, she shared it into two small bowls. And gave them to two kids. The two kids ate the noodles immediately. It seems that they did not have dinner for days. Mr. Lam, who was the boss of “Chinese food”, saw this and twalked owards them. She was inspired by the old lady, “Hi, you three are the 500th customer of today, you can award two bowls of Shang Hai Chop rice!! She said warmly.

A big smile went onto her face that was the most beautiful smile I’ve never seen.

Finally, they finished all the food and went back home.

How beautiful it was! A super kind master and three full people! I am proud of my boss.

Next day, they arrived at the front of the restaurant. I thought it wasn’t unusual, maybe they had spare time.

Time passed quickly. In the evening, they entered the restaurant.

“We are the 500th customer of today, may I get two bowls of Shang Wai Chop rice… free of charge?” She asked nervously.

A smile went to Mr Lam’s face, “Of course, lady, you can award this!”

The following days, they counted the number of customers of the restaurant! And they were the 500th customer everyday.

This is the most unforgettable experience in my summer holiday. I think they need not to worry about the dinner anymore!

Getting jobs during summer holiday (5C Aldred Lee)

Do you think it is good to get a summer job? Do you think student can learn from summer job? What do you think they can learn then?

I think getting a summer job is good to students as they can make some pocket money for themselves in the coming school term and in short, loosen the financial burden of the family. Students will understand their parents more when they make a life for them.

On the other hand, having a summer job allows them to meet people from all walks of life and the horizon can be widened.

However, if students do not know how to manage the time and money properly, they may waste the treasonable summer holiday which can be utilized as time for revision.

They may also waste money on some meaningless stuff like buying computer games.

I think students should think twice before they get a job during summer holiday.

7B Class presentation (Pseudo model) An Interview

Scene 1: book fair

The 2009 Hong Kong Book Fair started yesterday. In the presence of some “pseudo models”, people expect the number of visitors of this five-day-long event will break the record of similar events. .

Some said Chrissie Chow just took the chance to sell her products but some grumbled (抱怨) her albums and photos disgrace the society.

Scene 2: UST

Recently the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (UST) invited the pseudo model Chrissie Chow to share her working experience with the students and her ways to lead a successful life. Many students complained that Chrissie Chow was not qualified to be a speaker there. It was a hotly debated topic among the students.

Some said Chrissie degraded the ethical standard (道德標準) whereas others claimed she was successful in making a lot of money.

Our conclusion

Pseudo models have stirred up a lot of controversies (辯論) in the society. Someone said this trend would fade out very soon. let us wait and see what is going to happen. Anyway, we think it is the right moment for parents and schools to instill (灌輸) the sense of morality in the youths.

Re: Committing suicide: a way out? (7B Ng Ka Chun)

The Editor,

South China Morning Post,

GPO Box 50, Hong Kong

Dear Editor,

Re: Committing suicide: a way out?

I am writing to express my points of view on the issue of suicides in Hong Kong. In the past few years, the number of cases of suicides has increased dramatically. Some quote financial problems, unhappy marriages and stress as the major reasons for committing suicide. As the issue has come to an alarming state, we should reveal what things have set the backdrop and why suicide is not the way to solve problems.

The sudden economic downturn has brought many adversities to Hong Kong people. For example, they have lost their properties and jobs within a short period of time, and their economic difficulties have even led to unhappy marriages. What mentioned have laid burdens to people. They have to bear the stress from all aspects in work and families. As a result, some resort to committing suicide, believing that it is the only way to solve problems.

To be frank, committing suicide is not the way to solve problems but it leads to negative effects upon oneself, families, and the society.

To begin with, people who commit suicide definitely want to escape from the problems. When people come across adversities like being fired, they are scared and worried whether they are able to sustain the livelihood. With sorrow and

disappointment, some may commit suicide. However, have they ever considered the poor living below the poverty line, striving for food and warmth every day? Will the people committing suicide become shameful if the images of the poor spark in their minds? There are far more than thousands of people who die of malnutrition and diseases. What Hong Kong people facing are short-term difficulties, while the battles brought by suicide to the family is long lasting. Committing suicide is just a sign of weakness. The plights actually strengthen our resilience.

The suicide of a family member does harm to the family. Imagine if you are facing the difficulties, the death of your family member deteriorates the scenario. You have really been plunged by two things at the same time. Definitely, committing suicide has not solved any problem. What it does is leaving the family a mess.

Finally, committing suicide is possible to contribute a negative atmosphere to the society. With reference to Japan and Korea, the great number of suicide cases shows us committing suicide may become a “trend” when something unfortunate occurs to us. It may become a chain reaction propagated in the society and its root is deeply penetrating into the culture. If so, our kids may risk ending their lives just because of a failure in dictation! No one would expect such a depressing and pessimistic tone persisting in our surroundings.

In conclusion, suicide is not the way to solve problems as it is harmful to others and the problem itself does not disappear when suicide taken place. People facing difficulties should learn how to “turn adversities into opportunities”, which means that if everyone considers adversities as opportunities, they become more resilient and optimistic. Whatever how tough the condition is, nothing is insurmountable.

Yours faithfully,

Chris Wong

Technology benefits students (Yip Ka Wing, Andy, 5B)

Some people may think technology is a hindrance, instead of a help, to students. Do you think so? As a student, I do not agree with them.

First, technology can facilitate students’ learning. Students can obtain so much information on the Internet nowadays. For example, a student who does Biology needs figures showing human organs to help him learn the subject well. In the past, he might borrow that from his teacher or go and buy it. However, with the Internet, what he needs to do is to click the buttons on the Internet and there will be lots of figures for him to choose. Technology saves our time, so we can have more time to spend on our studies. How can we say that technology is a hindrance to students?

Second, students can learn during chatting through ICQ or playing online games. When chatting through ICQ, students can practise their written English. This can make them write more and more fluently. Besides, not all online games are harmful to young people. Some of the games can enhance students’ knowledge in different aspects, like that in geography.

People may argue that if there were no technology at all, students would study harder. It is totally wrong. If technology did not exist, society could not make any progress. Modes of education would therefore not be possible to improve. Actually, whether to study hard is not the result of technology but depends on students themselves.

To conclude, technology is not a hindrance, but a help, to students as long as students can use it appropriately.

Technology is a hindrance to students (Ho Chi Hui, Gibson, 5B)

Technology can be harmful to students’ studies and mental health.

First, students may not be able to control how much time they spend on the computer. Some students spend too much time on the computer even though they have lots of homework to do. When they spend too much time on the computer, they will become too tired to do their assignments. They may find doing homework boring. As a result, they will ignore their homework.

Second, spending too much time on the computer can make students addicted to it. This will be harmful to their mental health. When they spend the whole day sitting in front of the computer and only chatting with friends by texts, they will get used to not talking to people face to face. When their addiction becomes more serious, they may not be willing to talk to their family. This will make their relationships with their family poor.

Finally, there are no any advantages for students to talk through ICQ or other online chat rooms. For example, when students talk through ICQ , most of them will type in Cantonese. Only few of them type in English. How can they improve their English standards? Even though they English, they tend to use ICQ language, which is created by themselves, like codes rather than language. Some of the words of the ICQ language may contain violence or even sexual messages. This will decrease students’ abilities of mastery of formal language.

“No pain, no gain.” If students do not spend time on their studies, they will not obtain good results. Therefore, students should spend more time on their studies instead of the computer.

The Sixth Form 7 Graduation Ceremony ~ The Vote of Thanks by the Student Representative

Dear Dr. Marcus Chiu, Ms. Pang, Board of Stewards, IMC members, Our Honorable guests, Parents, Principal Mr. Chan, Teachers and Fellow students,

I am Wong Yuen Tung from 7A. It is my honor to share a few words here today on behalf of all the fellow graduates.

I have been studying in this school for seven years and it has been the most precious and important part of my life. In these years I have so many joyful and happy experiences, and, of course, there were also challenges. I was never alone as my dear classmates, schoolmates and teachers accompanied me throughout my secondary school life.

Our Principal has given us so many resources, not because of our request, but because he would like to provide us with the best. Every time we came across him, he smiled at us and asked how we were doing. There is no doubt that the workload of a secondary school principal is heavy, but our principal is still willing to spend hours on chatting and sharing his care and love with us. We really have learnt so much from you, thank you, Mr. Chan.

I wish also to thank all our teachers, because they have been so dedicated and thoughtful. Some sent e-mails to give us highlights in study and encouragements. Some sacrificed their personal time to give us extra lesson. Some even gave their cell phone numbers to us so that we could ask them whenever we had questions. We were so busy during the study leave and so were our teachers. We were so nervous during the examinations and so were our teachers. I would really like to, once again, give them our big thanks.

It seemed to me that the cert-level examination was tough when I was in form five, but now I could see that the two-year advanced-level study was even more difficult. There were times when I really wanted to give up and times when I felt frustrated. I was so glad that we have been facing every hurdle hand in hand. I am most grateful to all my classmates, for their love, care and support.

Most of us have been studying in this school for seven years and there are also classmates who have been studying in this school for a much shorter time. But no matter how long each of us has been joining the Makopanian family, I am sure that he, she or I myself will never forget the best friends, classmates, teachers, principal and all that had been done for us.

We will soon become alumni of the school after graduation. To demonstrate that we are still part of the school, we would like to contribute to the alumni scholarship, which serves as an academic support to our fellow schoolmates. We all think that this is very meaningful.

Finally, I sincerely hope that all our F.7 graduates could lead our life according to our school motto and the teaching of Jesus Christ, that is “Be the salt and the light of the world”. May our Lord be glorified.

Thank you very much.

4C presentation (The Case of Nina Wang Kung Yu Sum’s Will)

Characters:
Narrator 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5, Chan Zhen Chung, Witch, Kung Yu Sum, Lawyer1, Lawyer 2

N1: Nina Wang Kung Yu Sum’s will is put under investigation due to the doubt of its authenticity. (真確性)
L1: We are defending lawyers of Nina’s family.
L2: We found the so-called ‘Nina’s will’ contradictory. (互相矛盾) It seems that Mr. Chan Zhen Chung, who receive the largest benefit from the will wasn’t that close with Nina as he had claimed.
L1: And the signature on Nina’s will has been proved to be a forgery. (偽造)
N2: However, ignoring all the opposing opinions against him, Chan, the bigger beneficiary from the will insist on the close relationship he had with Nina.
C: I am Nina’s lover! She wanted to have a child with me! And as you can see, she really had no reason to reject such a handsome and gorgeous man (美男) like me! We had been secret lovers and close partners! She loved me deeper than the ocean and wider than the universe! Hey guys! Look at me! I believe that no girls can reject a handsome, rich and thoughtful man like me! I and Piggie little Nina were definitely in a relationship.
N1: It’s really difficult to define the genuine and sham (真與假)in this case, especially when Nina had died and didn’t have the chance to speak for herself.
W: (the witch come up and say in a deep, low voice behind Narrator’s back) You may need some help from me.
N2: (stutter because of the fear caused by the sudden appearance of the witch) Well, can you ask Nina to out from wherever she is now to speak for herself.
W: She is now being torture (受酷刑) in the world of death. ………………………..(Do the magic and make some weird noise, throw the rice)

Kung: (Eyes widened, raising two hands horizontally in the air, soliloquize in a flat tone) People shouldn’t covet (貪求) after what they do not deserve to have. I am rich. But I am unhappy. Money doesn’t mean anything. Health, happiness and hope are the most important. Greed is a poison, Greedy people tell lies. If he really loves me but not my money, he has got no reasons to say such things…don’t believe him (start kneeling down)…Don’t believe his lies(totally disappear)
N3: Well, though the two of them insist on their stances and the truth is yet to be disclosed, it’s doubtful of Mr. Chan to disclose Nina’s privacy (揭露私隱)while claiming that he loves her deeply. He knows clearly that what he is doing is affecting Nina’s fame and her family.
N4: So we definitely have the reason to accuse Chan of loving Nina for her money or even making up a will of forgery.
W: (suddenly come up) Greedy people should be punished! They should be cursed (詛咒)! People who love someone for her money are undoubtedly unforgivable (不能原諒)and despicable.(卑鄙的) (suddenly scream) They are going to live in pain and remorse ( 自責)ever after.
N5: That’s the end of our class’s presentation. Thanks for watching.

Should junk food be banned at school tuck shops in Hong Kong? (3D LEE TSZ WING)

In my opinion, junk food should not be totally banned at school tuck shops in Hong Kong.

First, eating junk food is convenient. It can be served immediately once it is bought. For example, it takes only three minutes for you to prepare a cup noodles after pouring in hot water. How conveniently it is!

Second, it can save a lot of time. The recess is short. When we are in a hurry, we can still have something to eat before the bell rings instead of feeling hungry in class.

Third, junk food is very tasty. It fits the palates of ordinary students in Hong Kong. Most young people love junk food very much. Junk food is exactly what they want.

Last, junk is inexpensive. It is much cheaper than other kinds of food. We can buy a helping of potato crisps with only a few dollars. It is affordable to most students even though they do not have much pocket money.

In conclusion, I think junk food should not be banned at all school tuck shops in Hong Kong.

• to bring something down: to reduce something

• to cool down: make something cool or cooler

• to get over: to recover

WEDNY: Well, after I saw him off at the airport, he took a plane to Australia!
CHRISTINE :What a great start! Where in Australia? Sydney? Perth?
WEDNY: Actually his plane touched down in Melbourne. He’s going to travel all around Australia.
CHRISTINE: So, his plane touched down - it landed, in Melbourne. I’d love to go there. But I think he’s really brave travelling around on his own.
WEDNY: Well I’m sure he’ll meet lots of people while he’s travelling.
CHRISTINE:That’s true.

• to see someone off = to say goodbye to someone, using at the airport or train station.
• to touch down = when aircraft is landing
• Where are Sydney/ Perth/ Melbourne

Mum, you better? You Okay?
RUTH: Hey, Sebastian, my lovely boy… I feel much better now… Where were you?

CLUB (3B Benjamin Wan)

Hello! I’m the vice-chairman of SCRABBLE Club. Let me introduce our Club first. The SCRABBLE Club is a new interest group started last year. It is a fun game played by 2 to 4 players, forming words from individual lettered tiles on a game board.

In order to promote students’ interest in playing with words, we are going to hold a competition for our junior form students. All students of F.1-F.3 are welcome to join. SCRABBLE is a very good way to learn and apply your vocabulary. The more words you make up the higher score you can get.

Therefore, playing SCRABBLE is a fun way to enrich your vocabulary skills. We look forward to meeting you all at the competitions.

Come and enjoy the SCRABBLE activity. Some prizes are ready for you.

Stop! Think!

Dick is a policeman, and he is 45 years old now. Dick’s family includes his wife, Kelly, his son, Michael, and his daughter—Janice.
They are a kind of traditional family, the father goes to work and the mother takes care of the housework.

One day, Dick is watching a car race on his TV. It makes him think about his dream many years ago. When Dick was only 8 years old, his father brought him to a race track and showed him what a car race is. Dick’s father told him, “When I was as little as you, my Papa brought me here too.” Dick replied, “Is he a racer?” “Yes.” His father answered. “But he is not a good role model, he chose his dream between me and mum.”

Dick spends half of his life to contribute to his family. He will do anything to make his family happy. But this time, Dick is a little bit swayed. He wants to achieve his goal, and does something for himself for he is so tired to give up the goal. He is sitting on the chair and asking himself, “Which one is more important to me? Dream or my wife, son and daughter. And suddenly, he decided to ask for his best friend’s opinion.

Dick: I am so confused. I don’t know what to do.

Ricky: What’s up, buddy?

Dick: I want to be a car racer!

Ricky: What is wrong with you? Man, you are a cop! How can you?

Dick: I know it sounds crazy, but it is my dream.

Ricky: It sounds very strange too! But as your best friend, I can’t tell you to give up, right?

Dick: Yeah, I am going to tell my wife.

Ricky: Are you crazy? She will kill you!

Dick: But I love my wife, I can’t lie to her. Don’t worry. I’ll be fine.
Ricky: God bless you, Buddy!

Scene 2

Dick is at home now. He is thinking how to tell his family about his dream to become a racer. He is very annoyed.

Dick: (thinking) How can I tell my family? They’ll be very unhappy. I can’t do that. But this is my dream. I like it so much. I must tell them and I think they will understand me.

In dinner, all family members stay together. Dick wants to tell them immediately.

Dick: Kelly, I want to tell you something.

Kelly: I want to tell you something too. Can I tell you first?

Dick: Ok. What do you want to tell me?

Kelly: I have a baby. It’s been two weeks old now.

Michael: Oh! Mum, you have a baby! Is it a boy or girl?

Kelly: I don’t know. It is too early to tell.

Janice: I think it’ll be very lovely.

Kelly: Honey, what do you want to talk to me?

Dick: No, forget it.

At midnight, Dick and Kelly are on the bed. Kelly feels Dick is annoyed. She is asking him.

Kelly: What happened to you? Why are you so annoyed?

Dick: I want to be a racer.

Kelly: What! You want to be a racer.

Dick: Yes! This is my dream. I must do it.

Kelly: Oh! How about us? Do you care about us? Being a racer won’t have any future. Don’t do that!

Dick: I want to be a racer. I like this job very much. You can’t stop me.

Kelly: Even you don’t care about me. You must think about the baby.

Dick: I will care about you and the baby even if I become a racer. I can do that.

Michael: What happened Dad and Mum? Why are you two arguing?

Kelly: Your Dad said he wanted to be a racer. He doesn’t care about us.

Janice: Oh! Dad, you want to be a racer. Is that true?

Dick: Yes, that’s true. I must do that. That’s my dream. You can’t stop me.

Kelly: OK! If you choose to be a racer, you don’t need to come back again.

Michael and Janice: Mum! Don’t say that.

Dick: Ok! I go. I will not come back again.

Dick leaves the home quickly and he is very angry. Kelly, Michael and Janice are very sad.

Scene 3

Dick is crying in the spectator stand of a racetrack. Looking at the track, he thinks of being a racer and driving a racing car on this track from day to night. Now he has a chance to achieve his dream. He can’t let it go! Nothing can stop him now, even his family.

Benjiman: Hey! What are you going to be?

Dick: (As he points at the stage) I’m going to be a racer. Someday, I will become the one who stands on the top over there.

Benjiman: Then, how about your family?

Dick: My family… I think they will support me, although they feel angry about this tonight.

Benjiman: I was facing the same problem when I was young.

Dick: Did your family support you?

Benjiman: No, they left me at last. They left me a paper when I was back home. The paper says, “Just seize your dream. You will be the best one, but I’m sorry that I can’t stand beside you up to that day. I will bless you after I left every day.”

Dick: Did you become the best at last?

Benjiman: Yes, I won a lot of prizes but I didn’t feel happy when I was standing on the top of the stage. I thought prize would be everything when I had a family, but after they left, the prize became nothing to me. Without family, my heart is empty.

Dick: Then you think I should give up my dream and apologize to my wife after I go back home? The chance may not appear twice. Maybe this is the last chance in my life.

Benjiman: I just told you about my experience. What would you do next is up to you. I can’t control your mind, but I don’t want you to follow my footstep, the one that I am always regretting.

Dick: I… I don’t know.

Benjiman: Look at the photo in your wallet. Your family is smiling at you. The racing car is just a machine and the prize can’t comfort you when you are feeling down, but family is real. It’s the one you need to treasure.

Dick: Maybe you are right. I should listen to you. Can I ask you a question, who are you?

Benjiman: I’m your father.

(‘‘Ring! Ring! Ring!’’ The alarm clock is ringing. Dick wakes up.)

Dick: (Look at the sky) Thank you, father!

An unsuccessful day out (1B Lawrence Lee)

On Saturday, my best friend and I decided to go for a barbecue in the countryside. We packed our bags, “Fruit, bread, coke, barbecue fork, meat…” We are checking our belongings. I asked my friend, “Hey! Why don’t we bring some rain clothes for us?” He replied, “The Observatory said tomorrow will be a sunny day! Don’t worry!” So, we didn’t pack our rain clothes.

The next day, we set off early at six o’ clock, and went to Sai Kung by MTR and minibus. Unfortunately, we missed the train and minibus and totally waited for half an hour. Finally, we went to Sai Kung. It was already noon. While we were walking along the little road to the barbecue pit and talking, the weather changed to cloudy. We didn’t notice the change.

When we arrived the barbecue pit, the weather became extremely bad but we still didn’t find it. The unluckiest event of the day happened - it started raining when we had just finished setting the charcoal and fire, “Oh! My God!” we cried. We quickly ran to the tuck shop next to the little road as quickly as we could. We were hungry so we ordered some food and drinks.

We waited and waited. The rain finally stopped so we paid for the food then quickly ran to the minibus station before it started raining again. My friend shouted, “I will never believe the weather report of the Observatory!” He kept on complaining so he didn’t see the road. Even worse, he fell down on the ground. He was fully hurt so I called the ambulance.

I thought that was not really bad because I had a free shuttle bus ride (the ambulance!), but at the second I had the thought, the ambulance crashed into a double-decker bus. Oh my!

A letter of Advice to Alice (4B Wong Ting Fung)

Dear Alice,
I am sorry to know about your difficult situation. I understand you have lied on your online friend Jimmy because you are not confidence in yourself. You thought you could impress him but you could not imagine he would come to visit you in Hong Kong with his family. I can understand how worried you are if he knew the truth!

I think the only solution is to tell Jimmy the truth. You must send him an email before he comes to Hong Kong. You should explain to him why you did not tell him the truth about yourself but first of all remember to apologize for telling lies.

You can tell Jimmy you are still eager and willing to meet him and his family next month. In my opinion, there is a great chance to be with him face to face.

I actually do not know why didn’t you introduce your real self to him in the first place. You need to be honest and have more confidence. Do believe that you are a person worth knowing. He kept on emailing you without your photo means he does not care about the outlook of a person. He must have thought you were an interesting person with nice characters or you would not be online friends since you met.

Don’t worry! I hope everything will work out fine.

Good luck and best wishes.

Title: Nicholas Nickleby Publisher: Penguin Active Reading
Author: Charles Dickens No. of page: 76

Story/Plot:
Nicholas and his parent – Mrs Nickleby and his sister, Kate Nickleby. They lived together, and they found Uncle Ralph to help them. Nicholas had a job in Dotheboys Hall. He met a friend – Smike, they were good friends, because Nicholas helped him to have a good life. But finally Smike died. They were sad. Also, Nicholas loved a lady, called Madeline Bray. He had found his love at last and they got married.

Setting/Background:
After Nicholas father died. Nicholas had no money, no job and a family to support. His only hope is Uncle Ralph. But Ralph is a cold-hearted money-leader with unpleasant, dangerous friend. Ralph gave Nicholas a job, but the job was very bad, Nicholas saw that the schoolmaster was vicious.

The main male character / hero is called Nicholas Nickleby. He is very helpful, because he helped Smike to have a happy life and let him leave the Dotheboys Hall.

The main female character / heroine is called Madeline Bray. She is a beautiful girl. She is good at art and she loves drawing. Nicholas loves her.

My favourite character is Smike. Because Smike is hard working and he is friendly. Although he was ill, his heart is also full of hope, he wasn’t afraid of dying. He was very optimistic.

The most impressive episode/scene is Happiness at Last. After an arduous time. Nicholas can find his love at last. Frist time Madeline didn’t like Nicholas. Also, she will marry Frank. But after she listened to Nicholas’s conversation, she was very impressed. And they got married finally.

Comments/Reflections: I love this book very much. I love Nicholas Nickleby too. I think he is very brave. He was not afraid of anything. He will help his sister, help Smike. When he saw some wrong things, he will stop it. Also, I think this story is interesting. Because I can see Nicholas, his parents and his friend’s ups and downs. Finally they all were happy.

Detailed written report (1B Lai Hoi Ching, Kaite)

The title of this book is ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’. The author of this book is Roald Dahl. The publisher of this book is Qustion Blake. I choose this book for my book report project because it is very funny and my family and I can learn many things through this book.

This is a funny book. Also, it is a family book about George and her grandmother. George, his parents and his grandmother, live on a farm in a small village. The village is far away from the city. Therefore, George has no friends and he always feels lonely. More unfortunately, his grandmother treats him very bad. “You are growing too fast. Don’t eat so much chocolate. Boy who grows too fast will become very stupid and lazy.” His grandmother always tells him. George felt very unhappy with these a lot of things. He thinks he is very useless for his family as he can do nothing right in his grandmother’s eyes. He had a wonderful idea about curing his mother. That was making a medicine. He thought a medicine may cure the wretchedness of her so that he tried.

This story set in the countryside in England. So I think it is suitable for English children and teenagers. Also, I think this book is also suitable for Hong Kong’s children because I think Hong Kong’s children treat their parents very bad and their parents spoil them. They can learn how to get along with their family. That’s the main idea of this book. Moreover, they can learn to be safe at home and not to do dangerous experiments at home like George.

I think this book is very funny. I enjoyed it very much. Even my parents, they read it with me, they also said it is funny. We laughed together. This book makes us spend more time on each other. I don’t like George’s family as I think this family is a weird family. They don’t usually talk with each other. I don’t like this lifestyle. There are many characters in this book, like George, Dad, Mom and grandmother. I like them all. But my most favourite character in this book is grandmother because she is very funny and cranky.

I think the best part of this book was when George was trying to make more Marvellous Medicine, he forgot some of the stuff that he put into the first medicine. It is very exciting. But this book is a bit horrible. Because one of the sences was about grandmother. She went up to the sky but her feet were in the sitting room. Her body was in Geogre’s room. Her face was in the attic roof. It was a little bit scary. I think the author’s use of words is brilliant and his style is excellent, especially when he described grandmother’s evil and her feelings. So I think Roald Dahl is an amazing wrtier. I would read another book by this author. I learnt to be good to my family members. I would recommend this book to all my friends and my relatives.

I thinky this book is very excellent. If I can give marks to this book (ten marks is the full mark). I will give this book nine marks. I think everyone should read this book. You may learn more through this book. You can borrow this book form all of the public libraries.

Title: Big Little Bus Publisher: Ladybird Books Ltd
Author: Nicola Baxter No. of page: 24

After finish reading this book, I found this book is inspiring. Why do I say this? It is because……, let me tell you the summary of this book first, then I will analyse the book’s plot. The story is about a little bus and a big bus. They were having a competition: Along the way to the bus terminus, who carried the most passengers is the winner. Then, the little bus started to think: “I can’t win, but I will work with my own effort!” At last, the little bus won! The reason why the littlle bus won is: He worked with his own effort, he hasn’t been lazy from the start to the finish of the competition. I think if we are lazy, whatever what we do, we will have no spirit to do it because we don’t want to pay any effort and time on it. I think we shouldn’t finish something in this way; oppositely, we should pay our whole spirit and time on it, this is the only way of success. I think this book is inspiring because although the little bus was small, it can carry more passengers than the big bus because he didn’t give up, he thoguht he couldn’t win, but he still complete wilh the big bus, at last he won. This story’s main idea is telling us not to think ourself useless; oppoistely; we should pay our whole spirit and time on everything, that way, we will be successful therewise, we will like the big bus, appogant and concited, then, we will not be successful when we are doing everything because you think you are the No. 1, you don’t listen to the others, this is the failure way, we shouldn’t follow it.

CELEBRITIES DESERVE PRIVACY (4C, Mok Kong Bay, Veronica)

Some people may be interested in celebrities’ history, lifestyle and love affairs as they are public and well-known figures, but I think it is unnecessary for celebrities to make their private lives public.
Firstly, celebrities are humans too and they can enjoy the human right just exactly like what we can. When we need privacy, when we need spaces, when we do not want to be offended, why do we dig up other’s privacy? Why do we mix celebrities’ love affairs with our hypothesis and spread it out? Do to others as you would have them do to you.
Secondly, digging up celebrities’ privacy may cause serious psychological damage on them. Like Gillian Chung, she has been destroyed after the disclosure of her scandal and she has therefore traumatically hurt.
Some people may say that public figures like celebrities should be role models for the public, especially teenagers, so they have to keep themselves clean from vice. Some others even claim that digging up their privacy can deliver a message of doing bad things will receive punishment to teenagers. However, that’s unfair. Celebrities are just human. They are not saints. They may sometimes do wrong things but they need a chance to turn a new leaf. Under great pressure from the public, it can be difficult for them to do so.
On the whole, celebrities’ privacy should be respected. Otherwise, awful consequences may occure.

REVENGE (4C, Mok Kong Bay, Veronica)

It was the worst experience Ivy and Sam had ever had at the cinema. First, a tall man blocked Ivy’s vision from the screen which irritated her.
‘I can’t see! Let’s change our seats’, she grumbled.
So they changed seats. But then there was some disturbing crunching sound with loud and noisy laughters. The pair of little lovers next to them was eating pop corns rudely and chatting loudly as if there was no one around.
‘I can’t hear, let’s change seats.’ Ivy complained, face reddening.
So they changed seats again. But as they sat down they heard an annoying voice, laughing, shouting out dirty words and grumbling about his job.
Ivy really couldn’t stand. All of a sudden, an idea pop up in her mind.
‘he,Sam,’ she said loudly as she blinded to Sam,’ what did you have for dinner today?’
‘oh, I had Italian food tonight. I ate pizza, spaghetti with chessy meatball and…’
‘hey,’ the man sitting who was talking on the phone interrupted,’ Do you mind lowering your voice, we’re in the cinema watching the movie!’
‘Well, look who’s talking, do you think you have the right to scold to us?’ asked Ivy.
After that, Ivy and Sam enjoy the movie in entire silence.

5E Class presentation (Topic: Make a difference in the fight against climate change, Written by 5E Nick Cheng )

Hi everyone, you may have missed the news about C40 Partnership, but you certainly notice the weather is getting warmer and warmer. In fact, Hong Kong has become one of the 40 cities in the group to fight against climate change.

What exactly is the objective of C40? One of the features is that cities from around the world share ideas to reduce global warming. I strongly suggest you visit their official website to find out more. Since Hong Kong is one of the C40 partnership members, my presentation today is to draw your attention to how we at school and at home can help reduce Hong Kong's carbon emissions.

We all know that climate change is a pressing issue. It affects us in many ways now and then. It affects our food and water supply, our economy, our culture and even our survival. In fact these changes are already happening.

Sound intimidating? Don't be. When I learned more about the C40, I found to lead a green life is not only challenging but also creative. It takes a lot of creativity and this means a lot of fun. It also makes us to look into details of our daily routines. As a result we do not take things for granted. We become grateful and cherish for what we have.

Since cities consume 75% of the world's energy and produce almost the same percentage of green house gases, we, residents of one of the most modernized cities, do play an important role in carbon emissions.

I sincerely pledge every one gives some thoughts on this after this morning session. Form small groups and discuss what you can do. I also hope class teachers will allocate some time every week to co-ordinate group discussions and translate thoughts into actions. Let us lead by example. Be a Makopanian and be a responsible world citizen.

5D Class presentation (Topic: How to relieve stress?)

Fung: (Annoyed and impatient) I feel so stressed recently, what can I do?

South: Do you know physical activity and sunlight have both been shown to relieve stress. Try both of them together to really boost your mood. Basketball, soccer, swimming, etc are some outdoor activities enjoyed by many teenagers. You should give it a try!

Nitika: Getting at least eightconsecutive hours of sleep each night and try to eat several servings of fruits and vegetables daily would also help.

South: Also, don’t forget to keep in touch with friends. A supportive network of peers keeps you happy and motivated. They will be happy to help you when you’re stressed, whether you need someone to listen to your worries or when you just want a gag.

Nitika: Don’t forget to spend time with your family too! Many teens feel their parents just don’t understand them. However, they will always be the ones to support you when you come across any difficulties.

South: Express yourself is also important! Let your creative side loose can really reduce daily tension. Try drawing, painting, singing or dancing. Trying out a new creative hobby will also help you feel good about yourself as you gain new skills.

Nitika: The most important is to get involved in your school and community. Giving back to those around you can make you forget about your own worries. Help out with something you really love by volunteering for sports and music event. Just any hobby you enjoy will help give you a stress-relieving feeling.

Fung: I’m much stronger now! Thanks for those great advice!

A memorable day with my super idol (4E Cindy Cheng)

I felt extremely excited that I could spend a weekend with Aviel. This was a dream that I had not imagined before! We had decided to spend this special weekend in Hong Kong.

At nine o’ clock in the morning, I went to the airport early to wait for Aviel. After a few minutes, the flight from Taiwan arrived and I saw Aviel. She saw me and smiled at me. After that, I asked her where she wanted to go. She said that she wanted to go to Disneyland. So, we had decided to go to Disneyland.

We took MTR there! When we were on the way, Aviel told me that this was the first time she took the public transport of Hong Kong.

When we arrived at Disneyland, Aviel felt very excited because she had not gone to Disneyland before! We started our wonderful trip right after.

First, we went to ride on the roller coaster. After that, we went to play other games. When we were making up decision, a girl recognized Aviel and she asked Aviel to give her an autograph. Luckily, other tourists couldn’t recognize Aviel and we could keep playing in the park with lots of enjoyment without being bothered.

After playing for one day in the park, Aviel and I felt a bit tired yet we still walked around. We had dinner at a restaurant in the park at last. We both felt happy about the trip. Aviel told me she was glad that she could play in the park like an ordinary person! She was no longer a pop star today! In fact, wherever and whenever she went in Taiwan, many paparazzi and fans would follow her! Sometimes, this made her feel disturbed!

Finally, we went to the airport together, and I told Aviel to send me letters after she went back to Taiwan. I enjoyed the trip with Aviel very much!
