1 Corinthians 13: 1 & 13

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Do you know (1) why seawater cannot be drunk?
(2) why we should not pull out your white hair?
(3) why it is difficult to bit a cockroach?
(4) why we should stretch ourselves?

(1) No. Seawater has a high concentration level of salt and minerals. Our body has to remove the excessive salts and minerals through sweat (汗液) and urine (尿液), through which more water is lost, thus greatly increasing the workload of kidney (腎).

(2) No. Pulling out hair hurts our hair follicles (毛囊). The production of melanin(黑色素) will be further reduced. More black hair will turn grey and look unhealthy. To alleviate the situation, we could take in more iodine (碘) and have adequate rest.

(3) Scientists found that before anyone taking any action to catch a cockroach, it has escaped already. There are 440 wind detectors(偵測器) on a cockroach’s tails. They are very sensitive to wind movement and speed.

(4) If we sit or stand still, in addition to intense mental activities, our brain lacks oxygen. After stretching ourselves, our brain has more exercise and takes in more oxygen, resulting in improvement in concentration.

Reflection on the news “Hero dog risks life to save kittens” (4B Chow Pui Sze, Junta)

I have recently read a news article about that a dog rescued four kittens in the fire. It touched me very much when I read it. When fire broke out in the house, the people fled the house and left four little cats inside. The kittens were saved by a dog. This makes me think of the fact that people always think that dogs and cats are rivals and they can’t live together. I don’t so. I’ve watched a TV programme about animals in which a dog takes care of an ill cat. When the cat gets well, they stays together like mother and son. It’s so sweet. I love animals and I have a dog, she loves to follow me. When I read the news, I was angry. I think they should have rescued the cats. When people keep pets, they have the responsibility to protect their pets and ensure their safety. Some people buy their pets because they are cute but when their pets fall ill, they will dump them. I think this is irresponsible.

As a Hongkonger…(7B Alvin Chung)

How do you identify yourself, as a Chinese or Hongkonger? Since the handover 11 years ago, the mainland leaders have been obviously anxious about Hong Kong’s patriotic sentiments and winning hearts and minds from Hongkongers. Although the Beijing Olympics and space walk have made Hongkongers feel proud to be Chinese, the achievements overshadowed by some scandals in the mainland.

Recently, China has numerous accomplishments such as the Olympics and the Paralympics which were widely praised as well organized. The spectacular opening ceremony and Chinese athletes’ medal-winning moments were the most moving parts and were linked to a surge in national pride. After that, the motherland’s first spacewalker won the Hongkongers’ hearts too.
The mission realized the 100-year dream to carry people to the space as well as brought the country one step closer to building an independent space station to rival the International Space Station. It is also a milestone to show off China’s technological knowledge and cementing its status as a space power. Due to the above accomplishments, the Hongkongers feel more attached to and more supportive of the mainland. Some people believe China’s world image is progressing. Its booming economy and evolving culture make China have a higher global status.

However, there are many issues or scandals which make people lose confidence or trust in mainland such as lack of human rights and environmental awareness. The most controversial is the tainted-milk scandal. The snowballing tainted-milk scandal killed at least four infants and left more than 53,000 children ill. Therefore, many citizens are concerned about the food safety and view Chinese products as a bad brand.

To conclude, if Chinese government wants to win the hearts and minds from Hongkongers or even all the world, it should hear the voice of the public. Firstly, the Chinese government should take a more active role in promoting human rights and continue to improve its political system. Moreover, expanding the media freedom and giving the public a bigger say concerning state affairs are necessary Otherwise, China’s national image on international status would be harmed.

I believe that all of you know who will be the next president of the United States. Barack Obama, he is back. He always said America needs to “change”. But do you know who is the first black people who really changed America? He is Martin Luther King, Jnr.

About 50 years ago, America was not fair. Black weren’t treated equally. Martin wanted to help America change, just a little change which is black will be treated as a white. At that time, black’s were not allowed to play in the same parks or eat in the same restaurants as the whtie. When Martin grew up, he did a lot of things such as having a march to let people know what he wanted, sending mails etc.

But he was arrested a total of 16 times for his protests, hate mail and attacks… He did such a lot of things so that blacks would be treated the same.

Barack Obama’s change may not be the same as Martin because Martin had helped the black, he helped them got the freedom and equality. People might think Obama was a legend but I do think he is.

Racial discrimination should not appeare again in this world! Because we all are the same, we are human, we should not discriminate the people who are not the same colur as us. This is the thing that I learn from this book. I also hope you can learn this.

Questions
1 Who is Marin Luther King?
2 Why is he important in American history?
3 Do you think Barael Obama will be a good president for the USA/world?
4 Do you think Sabina was a sweet voice?

The Red Velvet Ribbon (3C Hui Fung Shan)

Dearest Love,

When you see this letter , that means I’ve left you and you’ve taken off my ribbon .This is destiny. I’ve always known that I will have this day . You want to know what happened.

It’s a long story. A long time ago when I was a child. I was an ugly girl . My family left me because of my ugly face . Nobody liked me , no one wanted to make friends with me. They thought I was a monster.

When I was eighteen. I planned to kill myself. But one day, I saw you. It’s the first time I saw you. I was enchanted by you. I loved you after I saw you. But I knew you wouldn’t like me . You would be afraid of me . I felt sad and one night I went to a river and cried for a long time.

Suddenly, a brightly light reflected in my eyes. A fairy appeared. She comforted me and helped me. She said she could make me to become a beautiful woman. But I had to pay price. She said she needed to cut off my head and change my face. I felt so scared after listening to that. She told me she will use a red ribbon to link my body and my head. But I mustn’t take off the red ribbon forever, otherwise my head will fall down and I will die. I promised her . And I fell into a swoon.

When I got up. I discovered that I had a pretty face. So I took the opportunity to meet you.

This is the reason why I didn’t take off the red ribbon. But I know one day you will know the truth. I feel so sorry about this. Promise me don’t be upset after I die. Look after our baby. And forget me.

At last, I need to tell you. I love you. Goodbye , my love.

The life story of a hard-working boy (2E Tony Cheng )

I am not an outstanding student; I cannot run very fast and my school results are not the best too. The only special thing about me is my hard-working attitude. My family always say I am as hard-working as a bee because of my hobby. I practise Tai Chi every day, even when the weather is bad.
I have got some important things in my life. First, the most important persons in my life are my parents. They raise me and teach me a lot of things. Moreover, they help me to overcome hardship. My Tai Chi master is an important person to me too. Because he is a demanding man, he inspires me to become a hard-working person.
I had a terrible accident when I was young. I was hit by a taxi. The taxi knocked me down when I was crossing the road. Many bones in my body broke. Therefore, I could not walk for two months. I think this is the most terrible event in my life.
In my opinion, everyone will get a chance to succeed because I got my own chance and became a successful person too. That beautiful chance was my first competition. At that time, I was very nervous so I tried my best to calm down. Finally, I got the first place.
I chose to study in Ma Ko Pan. It is the best choice I have ever made. Also, I have made many good friends in this school. And, the school introduced Jesus to me. Now I am a Christian.
In the future, I want to be a lawyer. Although it is a hard job, I will work hard to achieve my target. My personal motto is ‘I wouldn’t be afraid. I will try my best until I succeed’.

The life story of a shy girl (2E Mandy Chan)

My name is Chan Ka Yan. I am hard-working. I always work hard and hand in homework on time. I am patient too. I will not get angry easily. I am also shy. I am afraid of speaking in front of many people and I am not good at speaking.
There are some important things in my life. My parents are the most important people to me. They take care of me all the time and give a lot of love to me. They also give me anything that I want if they can. Friends are also important to me. They always talk and play with me. We can share happiness or pain with each other. When I am sad, they will keep me company and cheer me up. Health and money are important too, but they are not as important as my parents and friends.
There are three important events in my life now. The first event is living in Hong Kong. It is safe and comfortable to live and study in Hong Kong. The second important event is studying in Ma Ko Pan. There are many friendly and nice teachers. They teach us well and take care of us. I am happy in this school. The last important event is making some good friends in this school. They give me support and encouragement all the time. They never leave me alone.
I have got some chances in my life. Studying in 2E is one of the chances. I made some new friends and study hard in this class. I hope I will have some unforgettable memories at the end. I think joining the Volleyball Team is one of the most important choices that I have made so far. I was very thin and weak when I was a little girl. After I started to play volleyball, I become stronger and I am not as shy as before. I also made a lot of friends in the Volleyball Team.
I want to be a doctor when I grow up. Someone said this is because a doctor can earn much money or meet some handsome boys. But I just want to help the sick, poor people. I think this is the happiest thing I can do. I hope my dream will come true. We all do not know what will happen in the future, but I will try my best.

Should the government be responsible for ensuring the food safety? (5E Kwan Wing-Hang, Vivian)

The milk scandal has aroused great concern about ensuring food safety. In my opinion, both of the government and food producers should be responsible for ensuring food safety.

We should not blame the government for not safeguarding food safety. Food producers have to ensure the food they produce is safe for the public to consume. They should have the conscience to protect consumers’ interest and, most importantly, health.

On the other hand, the government should monitor food producers and impose penalties if necessary. I suggest the government of setting heavier penalties for those who violates the law and set a higher standard of food safety. More professionals should be employed to test food products so that food safety can be secured.

Time to take action on small-class policy (5E Nick Cheng Lai-hon) (SCMP 13 Oct, 2008)

As a student, I undertstand the benefits of small-class teaching. First of all, teachers are able to devote more attention to each student.

Secondly, there are increased opportunities for interaction among students. A lot of learning happens when there are discussions and ideas are shared. I cannot accept the Education Bureau’s explanation that there is a lack of classroom space for small-class teaching.

The problem can be easily overcome, and the bureau should allow schools to have classes of 25 to 30 students. Classroom rotation is also a solution; there are always empty classrooms in schools. In my opinion, a small-class teaching policy should be implemented in all schools immediately.

You Reap What You Sow(6A John Wong )(English Society)

With the parade of the uniform teams and the introduction of this year’s mascot by our principal, the whistle was blown, which symbolized the start of our school’s 12th annual athletic meet on 14th and 15th October.

Within these two days, all athletes showed their great determination to win. They tried their best and made use of their talents so as to achieve victory.

The most fascinating event was 4 x 100m inter-house student-teacher relay. The competitive spirit of the participants motivated all the audiences. Cheering teams yelled their slogans to further boost the ambience. At that moment, everyone was focusing on the event until all of them passed the finishing line. Ah yes, congratulations to Amos House!

The highlight was the closing ceremony and award presentation. This year’s closing ceremony was enchanted by the sharing from Mr. Chan Wing-kin, a representative of Hong Kong’s wheelchair fencing team in Beijing Paralympics. Mr. Chan has never been an athlete in the Sports Day in his childhood but a helper. He was eager to be one of the athletes and to feel the excitement of joining a competition. (Let’s refer to the attached interview.)

Afterwards, it was the memorable moment to Timothy House’s students as they got the overall cheering team championship due to tremendous effort paid before and in Sports Day. We should also give applause to Luke House, which got the overall championship.

This success of this “open classroom” is well supported by many good teachers, helpful students, and dedicated cheering teams. Finally, a rhythmic and uniformed clap put an end to the Sports Day.

Prepare Yourself to Grasp Opportunities
(An interview with Mr. Chan Wing-kin)

What makes you feel impressive about Sports Day? To win a couple of medals, or to be the overall champion? To me, it was the interview with Mr. Chan Wing-kin.

After having an interview with Mr. Chan Wing-kin, we were reminded not to be overweening because of victory or feeling upset because of failure. He shared his experience in Paralympics with us, ”I’ve seen many athletes with different levels of disability. I realize that I should treasure what have now.”

“I feel exhausted during these few years’ training as I am only a part-time athlete,” Mr. Chan added. “I need to strive a balance between both working and training. Although it is immensely tough, I have no grumbles as it is a precious chance for me to represent Hong Kong to join Beijing Paralympics.”

Mr. Chan admired the atmosphere of our school’s Sports Day and joked, “I could have won the competition in Paralympics if the cheering teams were there!”

This rising star of Paralympics ended the interview by encouraging us, “It is essential for you to get back to the track after you have been defeated. The lack of talent in sports won’t hinder your way to success. As long as you have tried your very best and prepared yourself, you will eventually grasp the opportunity to achieve success.”

Title: Matilda Publisher: Penguin
Author: Roald Dahl No. of page: 40

When you were four or five years old, what were you doing? I thought I were in Kinergarden and learnt the ABC. But a girl was different, she could read Charles Dicken’s books, could you? Do you know who she is?

“Matilda” is the answer and it is the title of the book. This book is about Matilda’s amazing story. She got terrible parents who do not care about her much. She went into a school which had a horrible principal and a lovely teacher. The principal disliked Matilda and Matilda did some unbeliveable things which you couldn’t image.

After finishing this book, I get a big reflection. I always think my parents are bossy and annoying because they explain the reason too many times. But now I think that is great, I get good parents! Matilda’s parents just like the TV, money and playing, they won’t care about the children if they go to school or do their homework.

I appreciate that I have good parents although sometimes I will dislike them. No matter how, they still care about me, protect me and teach me, even give up their life.

I can’t deny that Matilda is an excellent and extremely interesting story. Hope you will get the reflection too.

2nd English Activity Day

To be or not to be (Chan Mei Yee, 7A )

When you are walking on the street, sitting on the bus, reading magazines or even watching television, it is not a surprise to see advertisements about different tutorial schools. In the 21st Century, tutorial craze has already spread throug Hong Kong. In this essay, I will discusss the pros and cons of attending tutorial schools.

Let me start with the advantages of attending tutorial schools. From students’ prospectus, tutorial classes can help students enhance their knowledge and consolidate the foundations of their learning. For some slow learners, tutorial clsses can help them catch up at school.

Also, tutorial classes provide exam skills. Those skills may not be tought in schools and most of them are tactical indeed. However, those tactical exam skills are essential for students to cope with the difficult questions in the public exams.

Moreover, private tutors may provide different learner development, like thinking skills, for students. Take Economics as an example. It is not only the matter of memorizing, but also logical thinking. Some might be stuck when they follow their teachers’ methods because teachers at school may not be able to cater for individual needs. But private tutors may provide another way of thinking and it may be useful for those who do badly at school.

Attending tutorial schools, as it turn out, it may bring many advantages, there are disadvantages though.

Some parents regard attending tutorial classes as a waste of money. For sure, it does cost a lot. It is expensive to pay $450 for four lessons.

Besides, the “video classes” which broadcast the teaching of tutors cannot help students learn better. If you have any problems, it is impossible to ask the tutor or stop the video. In the end, tutorial classes may not benefit your learning.

The most important disadvantgae is that tutorial classes might affect your school work. The tutorial classes cost up to one and a half hour every time, excluding the time of travelling, waiting and so on. Otherwise , it takes even more time. It may leave students no time to do homework or rest. You may fall asleep in class and affect your studies at school.

In my opinion tutorial schools have their own advantages, especially for some lazy students like me, those tutorial classes push me to learn harder and do revisions. You can be one of the tutorial school students or not to be. But the most important thing is that you have to make sure those classes suit you. Do not be like sheep, following the trend. Try to find what is good for your own studies.

Title: Colin the clumsy kitten Publisher: Macmillan
Author: Jenny Dale No. of page: 63

Everyone knows that I love cats a lot, and I had two cats before. Fluffy and fun, purry and huggable……that what my feeling about cats. “All eats are clever” I thought when I was small.
One day when I was packing my brother’s room, I found a book called “Colin the clumsy Kitten”. How come ! Clumsy kitten? I was disappointed by this, I determined to read this and found out what happened to this kitten.
This book is about a kitten, Colin. He is very clumsy and he can’t climb trees and chase feathers like other kittens. All he seems to do is knock things over. But clumsy Colin is about to prove that he is good at some things, he is putting effort to improve himself, and at last he succeeds.
From this book I knew that animals like cats are the same as the human being, some of them are clumsy and some are clever. Although you are the clumsy one, you don’t give up, you will become a successful person. Converesely, if you’re a clever person, but you don’t take up this natural opportunity, the God will withdraw it.
So all I want to say is everyone has their own special talents, even if you are ugly or stupid, you are still the unique one.

Cheng Fei--Qualities and Circumstances for Her Success (6B Lee Kwun Tak)

Different people have different definition of “success”. In my opinion, a successful person should try his best and overstep himself. I admire a person who is successful in China. The person is Cheng Fei who is a gymnast and has participated in Olympic games for many years.

In summer, Olympic games were held in Beijing. As a Chinese, I stayed at home in summer in order to support and watch the Olympic games through the TV. I was attracted by Cheng Fei in gymnastics. It is amazing that she showed numerous brilliant postures in different kinds of gymnastics. Unfortunately, she fell down from the balance beam so she lost a gold medal in her adept skill. Despite her careless mistake, she never gave up and she led her members to get gold medals as a team. I admire her very much and she is really successful.

For the success of Cheng Fei, special qualities are necessary. Firstly, she has relevant experience. She has participated in Olympic games before so she can share the experience with members and overcome the pressure. Secondly, she is calm. After she had a mistake, she could calm down at once. It is very difficult to control temper in a short time, but she could do it. Thirdly, she is resilient. I know that gymnasts must have training in China since they were just 6 or 7 years old. It was so difficult to overcome the homesickness as a child but Cheng Fei could. Also, the training was very harsh. She could not meet her parent, join extracurricular activities and even could not have their free time. It showed that Cheng Fei is independent and determined. I get to know above information from a TV program.

Beside the special qualities of Cheng Fei, the circumstances of China are also in favour of her development. Firstly, the government of China concentrates on gymnastics very much. There are some schools of gymnastics in China to cultivate gymnastics intently. Secondly, the competition is very intense in China. Thanks to the innumerable population in China, even gymnast pushes for participation in the Olympic games. If gymnast is sidetracked, he will be threatened by others easily. Because of these two main circumstances, Cheng Fei has become a successful gymnast.

Success does not depend on the result. It depends on your effort in the process, just like Cheng Fei.

Idiomatic expressions about HEADS

There are a lot of idioms related our heads.
These are some examples:

1. put your heads together
= discuss together to solve a difficult problem
e.g. John and his partner were doing a difficult project.
They put their heads together to decide how to start doing it.

2. be/stand your head and shoulders above somebody
= to be much better than other people
e.g. James sand very well in the singing contest.
He stood his head and shoulders above the other contestants.

3. heads will roll
= to tell someone they will be in big troubles for what they have done
e.g. “Don’t copy from the Internet. If you do, heads will roll for this!”
