1 Corinthians 13: 1 & 13

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

A Tough Girl (Lo Wing Yan, F.5D)

I think I’m a bad girl but I’ve been trying my best to be better. In the past, I blew up easily and this could scare you. But everybody has their own story. If people knew my story at that time, they might forgive me and tolerate me more.

My story started with my complex family and twin sister, who has suffered from an disorder since she was born. We grew up together. But as a child, I had to clean up all the mess she made, including her dirty plates after meals and even her poo. I used to be envious of other teenagers who could hang out with friends while I had to stay at home to take care of my sister, who looks like me but can’t understand me. What frustrated me most was that my parents usually told me off but had never scolded her. All these scenes weave my childhood memories, which are unforgettable but I wish I could forget.

All those childhood experiences have made me a tough girl. I don’t greet others with smiles because I don’t know how to smile. But it’s hard to make me cry. I don’t cry because I’ve told myself not to shed a single tear. I have to be tough because I have no other choices. I don’t believe promises because even my parents have let me down for countless times. As long as I live up to my responsibilities, I don’t care what others say.

Debate speech (5C Chow Ka Hei)

Adjudicators, Principal, Teachers and fellow opponents,

I am against the motion “Hong Kong is a good place to nurture professional athletes”.

In recent years, Hong Kong has held several large-scale international sport competitions. And our athletes got good results in these competitions too. Thus, some people think that Hong Kong is a good place to nurture professional athletes. But I strongly believe that Hong Kong is not a good place to nurture professional athletes because Hong Kong does not have a sporting culture or enough support for athletes.

The Hong Kong education policies are one of the factors. The education system in Hong Kong is examination-oriented. Most of the Hongkongers, especially employers, will only focus on students’ academic results. Many of them think that sport is not important at all. Also, some parents will force their children to focus on academic results even if their children have talents in sports. Our education system ignores the talents of sports players and is unfavourable to sporting development.

Second, Hong Kong does not have enough resources or facilities to develop or nurture professional athletes. Hong Kong only has one organization – Hong Kong Sports Institute – to nurture athletes. Although HKSI provides many elite sports projects like badminton, gymnastics and swimming, they are not enough to provide a good environment for athletes to have comprehensive training. Hong Kong also lacks internationally recognized venues for training. We all know that it is not possible for HKSI to provide all venues and facilities for each type of sports. So, how can we nurture professional athletes successfully in such an inadequate environment?

Moreover, the sports atmosphere in Hong Kong is too weak. Hongkongers focus more on work and business. Not many people are willing to spend time to do sports or have sports training. Hong Kong emphasizes economic development but not sports development. Thus, the sports atmosphere in Hong Kong is not strong enough. Furthermore, the sports development in Hong Kong lacks government support. To obtain qualification to represent Hong Kong in international events, potential athletes have to rely on their own resources and training. This will increase the difficulty for athletes to build up their professionalism in sports.

Critics may argue that there are good and professional athletes, such as Wong Kam Po and Lee Wai Sze, in Hong Kong, and this proves that Hong Kong is a good place to nurture professional athletes. However, the Hong Kong cycling team is training in Guang Zhou and Shenzhen most of the time due to the venue problem – Hong Kong does not have a formal venue for cycling. And this shows that Hong Kong does not have enough resources, facilities or government support to nurture athletes. Therefore, I believe that Hong Kong is not a good place to nurture professional athletes.

To sum up, I strongly believe that Hong Kong is not a good place to nurture professional athletes. Unless the government and the authorities formulate a set of comprehensive and long-term sports development policies to build a perfect platform for our talented players and athletes, it will still be difficult for our players to become professional athletes.

Thank you.

Joke #1 Bi-lingual dog

A firm posted an ad on its office window for recruiting a clerk. Successful candidate must possess following skills:

1)     use Microsoft Words with a typing speed of not less than 60 wpm

2)     use Microsoft Excels to make charts

3)     speaks at least two languages.

The ad was up for more than 2 weeks but no one ever applied for the job. One day, a dog walked up to the reception and barked at the ad for a very long time. The receptionist after several attempts failed to hush the dog, asked if the dog want to apply for the job. The dog nodded.

She took the dog to the manager who was amused and decided to let the dog try. Amazingly, the dog typed out a full page document with Microsoft Words in less than 5 minutes, and error-free. Then completed a chart with colourful graphic illustration on the Microsoft Excels.

'That's really impressive,' the manager said, ' But can you speak two kinds of languages.'

The dog said,' meow, meow'

Joke #2 Sherlock Holmes went camping

Sherlock Homes and Dr. Watson went camping one weekend.
They set up their tent, had a dinner, chatted over a nightcap, and then decided it was time to retire.

About midnight, Sherlock woke Dr. Watson up and asked, 'Watson, look up and what do you see?'

Dr. Watson, annoyed to be waken up at the middle of the night, but thought his detective friend must have found something unusual. So he looked up at the clear sky. ' Holmes, do you want me to make a forecast of the weather tomorrow? Judging by the heights of the cloud, I think tomorrow ....'

'No, no, look again.' Holmes didn't let Watson finish.

Watson being a very well educated man besides his medical training, said,' I see, you want to  talk about astrology. The stars ....'

'No, No, Watson, you really have to look hard and think.' Holmes interrupted again.

'Ah, I get you. Since when are you interested in Cosmology? Well, the universe ....'

Before Watson could go on, Holmes shouted, 'You fool, after looking up at the sky for so long, don't you notice that our tent has been stolen!'

Compensated Dating

Dear Editor,

I would like to express my views regarding the problems of compensated dating. According to the survey conducted by the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, compensated dating has become more widespread in Hong Kong. Recently girls are finding new ways to find clients including through online games. It deteriorates the problem critically. In this letter, I will suggest several contributing factors leading to this problem, followed by suggesting solutions in accordance to the problem.

In my view, one main reason for the emergence of compensated dating is the rewards for their companionship. Teenage girls have no financial income generally, except their pocket money from their parents. However, due to the mass media, their desires become more luxurious and beyond their ability to pay. In an attempt to get what they want, they choose to make money at the expense of their moral and body. The girls who participate in compensated dating can earn about HK$1,000 for each date which usually last two hours, said by Ah Yan, a girl having the experience.

In an effort to tackle the problem of compensated dating, I think the school should place more emphasis on educating the teenage girls about the citizenship and the morality. Schools should not only focus on the academic results of the students, but also cultivate their moralities and enhance their self-esteem. Also, the schools should train the analytic skills of the students to think properly under the influences of the mass media, preventing them from being materialistic. If it works, teenage girls will not earn money by using their body, contrarily they will respect themselves more and have a proper thought on their lives.

The other contributing factor to the emergence of compensated dating is the misconception about the compensated dating. The young women believe that compensated dating differs from sex work because they have a choice of clients. They think that they can judge the patrons merely by their appearance and brief conversations on the platforms. And the girls also think that compensated dating is legal in Hong Kong.

Actually, in compensated dating, more often than not, sex is involved, making this to be another word for prostitution. Prostitution is illegal in Hong Kong and some existing laws can be applied to charge compensated dating, including “Soliciting for any immoral purpose.” Lam, from sex workers’ concern group, warns that it is dangerous to judge patrons merely by their appearance and there is nothing to protect them from violence. To rectify the misconceptions, the government should strengthen the promotion and hold more talks about the concert ideas of compensated dating.

In conclusion, to tackle the problem of compensated dating, there is no other option but to educate the younger and enhance the promotion. We hope there will be no more girls involved in compensated dating and those involved can get back on the right track.

Yours faithfully,

Pat Chan

Comments – Conflicts between mainlanders and Hongkongers (6B Po Wing Shan)

In fact, the recent conflicts between the China and Hong Kong somewhat are caused by the impolite behaviour of the mainlanders. As the RMB appreciates against the Hong Kong dollar and the transport network becomes better, Hong Kong is easily accessible to the mainlanders. In addition, their money is more useful now as they can use less proportion of income to buy more expensive goods in Hong Kong. That’s why they come to Hong Kong for shopping frequently in these years.

Since they stay in Hong Kong for a longer time, we can see what they behave daily. They like shouting, arguing, glaring at people, complaining and slapping to something or somebody. These are the common scenes the local pedestrians have seen. I suppose that most of the mainlanders think themselves as the superior class who can do anything with their money. They put the profit above the conscience and look down upon the Hong Kong people. Some of them even said that they are the main support in boosting the economy of Hong Kong. Therefore, they are more suitable to live in Hong Kong, and hence have the rights to insult Hong Kong people! Their arrogant words and deeds keep touching off our angry constantly.

However, from the rational point of view, their impolite behavior is due to their backward education partially. Unlike us, their education system is defective during China’s politically tumultuous times. Many middle-aged or older mainlanders have been deprived of or received little education at that time.

But this can’t be an excuse for them to behave in an unruly manner. They not only give a disrespectful impression to us, but also give this impression to the world. Hence, it is necessary to educate or rule their manner. Maybe setting the rules helps restrict their behavour, but educating people the appropriate manner is the most effective and the long-term way.

6C Eva Wong

Dear Jack,

How are you? Time files, we are secondary six students after this summer holiday and DSE is coming. I am really nervous about it. How about you? Do you still spend most of your time reading comics and watching cartoons? Honestly, I know you still spend most of your free time on your Facebook. I am really worried about your habit which will waste your money and time. As we know, lose time is never found again. I really want to discuss this problem with you in their email.

Spending most of your free time on watching cartoons and reading comics may adversely affect your academic result. We are going to be a secondary six student. As we both know, it will be the toughest and most important academic year. Teachers always told us that we need to do revision after the lesson to make sure we can remember all of the content that we learn. Obviously, comic books and cartoons cannot help you to get 5** in the public exam. Furthermore, I heard that your exam result in the second term of secondary five was really poor. I really worry about you. You were always the best student in your class, but now not only your core subjects fall behind, but also your elective subjects failed. The reason of that is very clear, you spend too less time on doing revision and study at home. It’s time for you to spend more time on your study from now on!

Moreover, spending a lot of time on reading comics and watching cartoon cannot teach you how to have a communication with others. I remember that you were a little shy boy when you were small. It’s not easy for you to make a new friend in primary school. But I know that you want to have a change in secondary school. You joined the basketball team, debate team and also the prefect team. How can you give up your great effort? I know that you were absent from the regular practice of those teams and you just go back home after school and read your comic books. You are now becoming the shy little boy again! You should go out and enjoy the fresh air!

Apart from spending much time on your comics and cartoons, have you ever thought that it is not so meaningful to put a lot of money on it? I think you should spend your money more appropriately. For example, you can save your money. When you need to buy some reference book for study, you can afford it. I bet that you can learn more from these books. Also I do not think that these figures you bought worthy. Be smart, Jack! You can do whatever you want when you grow up and get into society. But it is difficult to go back to the school days. I really hope that you can minimize the money that you spend on it. You should find something meaningful and spend you money more wisely.

Last but not least, I know this email may make you feel annoyed and depressed. But as your bosom friends, I really need to remind you of these problems. You have dozens of time when you grow up and you can enjoy what you want to do. Please remember that lost time is ever found again. So, seize the day and cheer up. Let’s work hard on DSE together. Work hard! Play hard!

Best wishes,

Chris

Technology: more harm than good (6B Chan Chin Hung)

Since the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, advancement in technology has changed everything. People can communicate with others who live thousand kilometers away. Through advanced transportation systems, we can go everywhere. Most diseases can be cured. People’s life expectancy has become longer and longer. However, after a thorough analysis, someone has pointed out that technology does not benefit all people.

The first logical argument that comes to mind is that technology only benefits a small group of people in the world. Some people cannot afford to enjoy the benefits of technology. In fact, rich people or people from developed countries are the only parties to be benefited by advancement of technology. 10 percent of rich people own 90 percent of wealth in the world. Billions of poor people cannot get even clean water or enough food. As the advanced technology products like mobile phones, computers and vaccines for diseases are usually charged highly, the underprivileged cannot improve their quality of living. That’s the reasons why technology does not benefit all people.

Another negative effect technology has on people is the exploitation of the needy. Advancement in technology of Internet and transportation shortens the distance between people in different countries. Through globalization, some transnational corporations from developed countries have developed their businesses in developing countries. For example, electronic equipment producers like Apple and Google have set up a lot of factories in China and Southeast Asia due to the low salary level. These factories only offer a very low wage for local workers who cannot but accept the offer because of the lack of bargaining power. Some of them work for extremely long hours everyday and fall victim to the exploitation. Therefore, technology does not benefit all people but harm the workers in developing countries.

A more profound impact of technology on people is how it produces new forms of crimes. It is true that some technology is used in evil ways. Some wicked people make use of the advanced technology to break the law. A common example is that some hackers invade others’ privacy through the Internet. This kind of wrongdoing brings misery to victims and even brings huge social and mental pressure to them. For example, some actresses’ private photos were exposed to the public. Another example is some conmen swindle people out of their money by setting up fake bank websites. When people entered the passwords of their bank accounts, their money was withdrawn. In short, technology breeds new forms of crimes and harms the victims.

Some may argue that technology improves the standard of living of all people, but this argument is only superficially plausible. A common scenario is that technology improves only quality of life of some pole. In ancient times, the needy in the third world can only earn money by engaging in physical work. Nowadays, however, they are replaced by advanced machines. They can only stay at the same social level in their whole and cannot even have a chance to become richer. This unfair situation is brought by technology.

Technology is not as great as perceived by some people if not to all people. It leads to unfairness, exploitation and crimes. However, it is not the fault of technology itself. The key is that how it is used. It is time for another revolution, for people to remedy what they have done, for the sake of kindness and fairness.
